It only takes 1 minute and it will give you an impression of what we do.
An estimated 1.4 million people in Tanzania are living with HIV. Talking about the virus and its transmission is still taboo and many young Tanzanians are unaware of their status and the importance of getting tested on a regular basis. A potentially lethal combination: people who aren’t aware of their status are more likely to spread the virus to others and die from an AIDS-related illness.
Get Up Tanzania (GUTz) motivates young Tanzanians to take an important step in the battle against HIV: to get up and get tested!
For many, going to an official HIV clinic is a huge and scary step to take. At our popular edutainment festivals, we provide HIV education and testing in a relaxed and attractive setting. Famous artists perform their music and a theatre group stages an interactive show on HIV, all calling for visitors to get tested on the spot. GUTz’ set up just works: more often than not, people line up at our testing units until closing time.
Since our first event in 2014 we have welcomed almost 36,000 visitors at smaller and larger festivals and have tested over 10.000 people for HIV. 545 people in total now know that they are HIV-positive and most importantly are now connected to local clinics for follow up counseling and free, government-funded medication.
GUTz Foundation raises the funds needed to kickstart GUTz Organizations projects and coaches the Tanzanian team in finding local partners and sponsors, performing research, formulating project plans & reports and creating a strong organisational structure. While maintaining a close connection between Organization and Foundation we look after our core values: transparency and sustainability. GUTz Foundation started out in the Netherlands in 2014 and since 2016 also has a Belgian counterpart.
This is where the magic happens: the Tanzanian organization collaborates with medical and governmental organizations to realize festivals where they are most needed. Since february 2016 the Tanzanian NGO has been fully responsible for the implementation of projects and the search for local support and sponsorship. Thanks to the work of our Tanzanian team, we have seen exponential growth in the number of people tested and an increasing support by local governments and organizations.
