World AIDS Day 2014

World AIDS Day 2014

On the first of December 2014 (World AIDS Day) the first big GUTz festival took place in the centre of one of Dar es Salaam’s highest risk areas, Temeke Mwembe Yanga, as identified by local HIV prevention organization Pasada. The fact that this event turned out to have the highest amount of people tested on an event like this in the history of Pasada’s outreach project, showed that our setup was very successful. Of the 2000 people attending our festival, 549 got tested for HIV. The 15 people that were found to be HIV positive and had their first counseling on site all went to the local clinic for follow up treatment.

Especially the number of men getting tested at our festival was intriguing, as this is the hardest group to get into the clinics. With almost 5 times more people tested than at the event offered by 3 municipalities on the same day in the same area, the line in front of the testing units was still growing when the event needed to end. This successful turnout made us decide to continue our work, higher the target number of people to be tested and extend to different areas in Tanzania.
