#WAW2016

After our event on World AIDS Day 2015 in Kahama Town, we received the request of the District Aids Commissioner (DAC) to implement projects in the most hard to reach areas. Therefore our team carried out a research trip in July to look for the most destitute locations with the highest risk groups. Together with the DAC’s of Ushetu, Msalala and Kahama Town seven rural areas were selected to implement a full week of edutainment events around World AIDS Day 2016 (1st December).

From the 28th of November until the 4th of December 2016, Get Up Tanzania (GUTz) managed to organize seven successful testing events in Ulowa, Bugomba B, Mwabomba, Mhongolo, Kilago, Iyenze and Mwime.  In this World AIDS Week (#WAW2016) we created an opportunity for citizens of the rural areas to get tested for HIV. Thanks to the hard work of the entire team and the extra motivation by KMCT (Kahama Medical Cultural Troup) and famous musician Mchizi Moxie, 6710 people stood up and got tested. 457 people in total now know that they are HIV-positive, but most importantly, are now connected to local clinics for follow up counselling and medication. Working with doctors and specialists from the different districts made the implementation of our project very smooth and we are looking forward to joining forces in tackling other risk areas, such as availability of condoms and ARV’s.
