Magomeni 2015

Magomeni 2015

Our project is depending on big local support and should be taken over by Tanzanian parties and sponsors step by step: GUTz is just the platform that initiates this collaboration and facilitates the first steps. The aim is for existing Tanzanian organizations and individuals to take over in the end.

This happened in June, when our Tanzanian team organized the first event of 2015 in Magomeni, Dar es Salaam.
The target for similar small scale events was set at 200 performed tests, resulting from a pilot festival in 2013, where we managed to test a little over 100 people. Because the festival in Magomeni took place during the Ramadan, it took until midday until the first people could attend the event. At 2PM the festival site was mostly filled with children admiring their peers of Makini Organization and participating in the dance battle and talent show. Fortunately the interactive theatre performances also motivated the children’s parents to come have a look and by the time the event had to finish, the counter was at 265 performed tests. The overview of the ministry of health showed us that 10 people turned out to be HIV positive. In the weeks following they all attended ‘nearby’ clinics, received medication and (family)counseling.
