Kitunda 2016

Kitunda 2016

In August 2016 our team received the request from an anonymous Tanzanian sponsor to organize an event in Kitunda, Dar es Salaam, with a main focus on school going children in the age of 14 and above. Following this request, research was conducted in the area and the yard in between three different schools was selected as the festival site. Three days before the actual event, a pickup truck carried out Public Announcement up to 40 kilometers surrounding the selected area and informed people about the importance of getting tested on a regular basis and the opportunity to do so the next day in Kitunda.

As the donor specifically requested an event on the 1st of October, our team’s research unfortunately did not focus on other events going on nationally. On the actual day it turned out there was a big football match that interfered with our event and as we did not have screens on site, we lost a big crowd. In the end of the day the team still managed to get 211 people aware of their status and the person found out positive referred to a Care and Treatment Center. With a main focus on school going youth who all received HIV-prevention information and the anti-stigma message presented in the theatre performance, the event was still very important and taught us some important lessons for the future. Furthermore, it was the first event both financially and organisationally fully realized by Tanzanian individuals! Asanteni sana.
